Expanding your vocabulary with the Macquarie Thesaurus

A thesaurus is a treasure trove of new words for you to discover. More people write now than ever before, whether it be in messages, emails, articles, stories, or anything else. It’s important to keep the mind sharp and the vocabulary growing and one of the many ways to do this is to utilise a thesaurus.

The Macquarie Thesaurus is a little different to the usual basic online thesaurus. When typing in happy, instead of immediately displaying a list of synonyms for the emotion, instead a list of categories is shown.

By selecting the one closest to what you are looking for, you can find a useful list of synonyms. It’s quite simple. But in order to expand your understanding of the English language and your vocabulary, try some of the other categories. You’ll be intrigued by what you find.

The other handy aspect to the Macquarie Thesaurus is that it also contains lists of examples, notably in food, plants, animals, etc. Staying with happy, choosing the ANIMALS category takes you to a list of indigenous Australian birds. Try looking up cheese or succulent to see what you can find.

There is more information on how to use the Macquarie Thesaurus here, but we recommend diving straight in for a fun, illuminating experience. You never know what you’ll find, after all.
