Saure Gurken
Pickled Dill Cucumbers: Saure Gerken is still made in earthenware jars by many people in the Barossa Valley and traditional recipes are used. The small cucumbers are pickled in jars with vine and cherry leaves, vinegar and spices.
Contributor's comments: My dad still makes these. Unfortunately, all his crocks (earthenware, wide-necked jars) have broken but we manage. Every summer dad plants out the special cucumber seeds, orders his dill and makes jar after jar of these. Love them. Sometimes served sliced at happy hour in the local pubs together with mettwurst and cheese!
