schluck

A quick nip, (drink): At dances in the Barossa Valley, the men would sometimes disappear outside for a schluck.

Contributor's comments: In 1957 biking around SA, I happened to arrive at a Farm nr Kapunda and was invited to stay for lunch. Acceptance was preceded by the offer "to have a schluck" first, which turned out to be a glass of wine.

Contributor's comments: I lived most of my life in the Lobethal - Hahndorf - Barossa region of South Australia. In that region, "Schluck" was a common term for a friendly drink (usually wine) ... the name sometimes used for a fellowship meal with wine is a "Schluck und Schnitter". I think these terms are probably commonly used only by the descendants of the 'Barossa Deutsch' in South Australia and perhaps the Victorian Western Districts. I am now a Lutheran Pastor in Melbourne - the word 'schluck' seems to have travelled with the Lutherans, but is used only amongst themselves in their church communities.
