wash away

The early railway lines between Port Augusta and Alice Springs were laid flat on the ground. The line crossed many dry creek beds in the Flinders Ranges. When rain fell in the ranges, the creeks came down (flooded), taking the rail line with them. The break in the line was referred to as a wash away: There's a big wash away near Parachilna, and the Ghan's been stranded for a couple of weeks, so they're flying food in.
