Contributor's comments: As I recall, growing up in Wingham, in the 1970's, a carshed had four walls and you drove into it, whereas a "carport" had four supports and an iron roof, and you drove under it.

Contributor's comments: I grew up in SE Qld where carshed was a common name for the building in which the car resided.

Contributor's comments: In South Australia we always had a carshed. Only snobs called it a garage.

Contributor's comments: Carshed was where the car lived when I was growing up in Sydney. I don't think I heard the term garage until well after I started school.

Contributor's comments: I worked on the NSW Railways for 32 years and carsheds were where railway carriages were maintained and stored.
