Used in the Brisbane region in the 1950s for potato crisps or chips: I had a packet of potato flakes at the pictures.
Contributor's comments: Potato Flakes were the name we used in the 50s & 60s on the Gold Coast, then in Victoria in the 70s I had to use "crisps" but in recent years in NSW we've been calling them "potato chips".
