Contributor's comments: Sometimes also applies to kids as well as teachers. When I went to Moora Primary School in the late 70s/early 80s kids had to carry a bin, pick up litter and show it to the teacher on duty. This was referred to as 'yard duty' or simply 'duty'.
Contributor's comments: At my high school, 'playground duty' didn't refer to the teachers being rostered on for supervision in the playground. It was the name of the punishment given to students. We had to spend our lunchtime or recess picking up rubbish from the playground. Being given playground duty was a popular punishment with the teachers!
Contributor's comments: I had always heard and used the term "playground duty". We had a teacher transfer to our school from the NT but who had been born and raised in Victoria who referred to his "yard duty" much to our amusement.
Contributor's comments: As a teacher in Qld this is the universally accepted term, often referred to by its abbreviation "PGD".
