pughole

noun a hole in a dried-up watercourse, especially one in which rubbish collects.

Contributor's comments: Pugholes were claypits as far as I knew. There were many around the Brompton and Bowden areas. Rowley Park speedway was built in a disused pughole. On "Yes what" radio program the kids went to Pughole Public School and that referred to that district as well.

Contributor's comments: When I was a boy in Adelaide, pugholes were very deep clay pits in the western suburbs, surrounded by urban development. Clay was/is extracted for brickmaking. Some pugholes when mined out were used as landfill sites then developed as parkland, one was developed as a speedway (Rowley Park) & others eventually developed for housing.

Contributor's comments: In the past Adelaide has a number of brick kilns in the metro area. The clay was mined alongside the kilns and I believe the large holes in the ground were referred to pugholes. The Brickworks market is located in a pughole. Another famous location in a pughole was the Rowley Park Speedway.
