Contributor's comments: You occasionally hear this in Melbourne too. The CUB beer cans are colour coded. At our Department's happy hour in the 70s, you'd ask for a can of green (Victoria Bitter), white (Carlton Draught), blue (Fosters) or red (Melbourne Bitter).
Contributor's comments: A fellow soldier who was aboriginal and worked a hotel in Weipa, Nth Qld, said it was called greencan because aboriginals couldn't pronounce the 'V' In VB: Victoria Bitter.
Contributor's comments: When Territorians ask for a beer, they do so by the colour of the can and not the brand name e.g. green can is Vicoria Bitter, red can is Melbourne Bitter, yellow can is XXXX: "Green can thanks mate!"
