a delicatessen: I'm going to the ham and beef shop to buy some pork German sausage.

Contributor's comments: My mother was born in Sydney and lived there till about 1950. She often referred to the 'ham and beef shop'. I think she meant a corner store that sold various grocery items.

Contributor's comments: I grew up in a suburb of Sydney in the1950's and my parents always refrerred to the delicatessen as the 'ham and beef shop'.

Contributor's comments: As a child, I remember a "Ham and Beef" shop in our suburb. The range was very limited, compared with a modern deli, and I think they sold general grocery items too. The name McIlwaines comes to mind: were they a chain? I think they delivered.

Contributor's comments: This seems to have faded in Melbourne, but my father always called the Delicatessen ( never Deli) The Ham and Beef Shop. His dad owned one in the 1920's.
