someone who is seen alone or sitting alone (This term mostly used in school environments, not sure if it's still used). A few years ago I was talking to a friend from NSW Southern Highlands who looked at me blankly when I referred to someone as a 'nigel' - in her area they are called 'barry's'!: Come and sit with me so I don't look like a nigel. Compare neville, nof. Also, Nigel No Friends, Nigel No Mates.

Contributor's comments: We also used this term at school in the eighties in Brisbane, although we usually shortened it to "nige" eg. "Oh don't be a nige". I met someone from the Gold Coast who apparently called them "Scotts" as in "Scot no friends".
Contributor's comments: [ACT informant] I had this explained to me as "Nigel No Friends", but also as "Neville No Friends". There was also "Harry" (as in Harry Hanger-onner ... someone who just hangs around a group, of which they aren't really a part). "Barry" or "Baz" I've always heard used as in rhyming slang - eg; I am having a Barry/Baz (as in Barry Crocker ... a shocker - ie: a bad run of luck, or just not alert & on the ball).

Contributor's comments: Nigel No Mates was used in Vic in the 70s as was Scott Neville - Scott no mates and Never will. Neither of these was ever directed at me.
Contributor's comments: I live in southern Sydney. My 16 year old uses the term "nigelated" meaning the act of being left out.

Contributor's comments: It wasn't until I started high school in the late 90s I first heard of Nigel. He was originally "introduced" to me as Nigel No Friends.
Contributor's comments: This was used at the school I attended in the NT while growing up. Nigel, Nigelated, Nigelisation, Nigel-no-friends. It was used to indicate someone who was either being ostracised or who had no friends.
