shark meat as seafood. Ordering "flake" in a fish shop in Victoria - in NSW, believe it is "boneless fillet". Can't say what term is in Queensland (no longer on my menu!). BTW, am ex-Victorian.
Contributor's comments: A variation of the use of 'flake', deriving from its meaning as a 'piece of fried fish', heard among high school and university students. Used to describe other students who are active, evangelical Christians. A clever play on the long term Christian use of the fish symbol as a means of identification. A fellow student who is 'a bit flakey' may be perceived to have a tendency to display their religious beliefs.

Contributor's comments: Flake is a very common term, I believe, among fish wholesalers, and well known among fish consumers too. In South Australia at least.
Contributor's comments: Flake is also used in Tas to ask for shark at the fish shop. Something is flakie if it doesn't work very well.
Contributor's comments: I remember asking for "flake" in a Queensland fish & chip shop in 1962. Th proprietor gave a disgusted look and said "We don't sell cheap shark in Queensland!"
