Contributor's comments: In Darwin, NT in the mid-1970s, thongs were often referred to as "Japanese Safety Boots".
Contributor's comments: North west WA term used is "Japanese Safety boots", in relation to the mining industry requiring safety boots everywhere, but still relating to thongs.
Contributor's comments: Along with the "safety boots" expression, I have also heard the expression as Japanese (Chinese) parachute boots.
