group settler

noun a member of a group settlement.

Contributor's comments: Group settlers were brought to Western Australia through an arrangement between governments in Britain and Australia. The aim was to bring out people to settle (then) sparsely populated areas and make them productive for agriculture. The produce could then be exported to the UK. Facilities and infrastructure were almost non-existent and farms were small, so many settlers walked off their land. Group Settlement was most widespread in the SW corner of WA. There was also a similar soldier settlement scheme, also after WW1.
