Contributor's comments: In Tasmania, the "verge" is the cleared (usually) part of a sealed or unsealed roadway immediately adjoining the road but not extending onto the "nature strip".
Contributor's comments: I grew up in Sydney and also lived in Tasmania for many years. I agree with the verge being that part of the road between the sealed section and the edge of the road formation.

Contributor's comments: I grew up in Perth in the 70s and the every house had three lawns - the back lawn, the front lawn (between the house and the footpath), and the verge lawn (between the footpath and road). I had never heard the term nature strip until the I heard it mentioned on TV.
Contributor's comments: Most of Brisbane doesn't have footpaths! The footpath is the cement or ashphalt walkway between the fenceline and the naturestrip.
Contributor's comments: I agree with the other comments about the difference between Sydney and Perth. In Sydney the grass between the footpath and the road is the nature strip, in Perth it's the verge.
