choice

excellent: That's just choice mate!

Contributor's comments: I'm pretty sure I picked this one up from my relo's in Sydney in the 80s.

Contributor's comments: "Choice" was a favourite exclamation of approval in the Illawarra in the late 1980s. I never heard it used anywhere else, but that may be because it had a very short day in the sun. No one uses it these days, do they?

Contributor's comments: [Brisbane informant] 'Choice' is also used in the ironic sense, meaning the opposite of 'excellent'. 'That's choice, that is'.

Contributor's comments: My eldest daughter (now 23) noted when we first arrived in Melbourne from SA that "choice" (in the sense of "good" or "great") was used in SA but seemed unknown in Victoria.

Contributor's comments: I attended boarding school in the Southern Highlands of NSW. Choice was a most widely used term there in the late 70's, early 80's.

Contributor's comments: Yes I used it extensively growing up in Woy Woy Gosford area. I havent used it since and I haven't heard it up in Qld. Early to mid 90's it was still being commonly used. It did stretch up to Mid North Coast NSW as well and it was used in Kempsey area in the schools

Contributor's comments: "Choice" was very big in the Illawarra and South Coast areas during the 1980s. There was a locally produced kid's show on WIN TV called "Space Ace" featuring a pelican puppet as the host. who used this word a lot. When I moved to Sydney I found that no-one used "choice" except for who grew up around Cronulla/Sutherland - it turns out a lot of kids in that part of Sydney were tuning into Wollongong TV to watch Space Ace and probably picked it up there. Possibly an example of regional TV influencing the range of a colloquialism. Unlikely to happen these days with the advent of aggregation in regional TV markets...

Contributor's comments: "Choice" was widely used in Newcastle in the 80's. I still use it today, to the bemusement of those born after 1978. A very Novocastrian term from my youth.

Contributor's comments: An exclamation of your approval for something or someone: "Choice bro!"

Contributor's comments: This is also widely used in New Zealand and has been since the 1970s.
