Contributor's comments: Used widely on the Central Coast of NSW in the 1970s and 80s to deride non-local (and often incompetent or displaying uncool behaviour) surfers who "invaded" the local beaches from Sydney. Eg The surf was great until all the parras arrived.
Contributor's comments: I grew up on the Central Coast in the sixties and seventies and 'Parra' did refer to 'holiday invaders' but rather than being linked to bad or uncool behavior, it was a reference to the fact most of the hordes were from Sydney, patriculalry western Sydney. So from Parramatta you get 'Parra' and the 'Parras'. It was, I understand, strictly a Central Coast term. I lived at Toukley on the northern part of the coast and it was widespread.
Contributor's comments: "Parras" are westies (parra derives from Parramatta), the working class yobs who infest the eastern beaches; quite different from "parro" which comes from "paralytic" meaning hopelessly drunk.
