Contributor's comments: Train station appears to be an Americanism. Stations are referred to as 'railway stations' in most Australian cities. If I'm not mistaken Perth changed its terminology when it electrified its rail system and constructed the Joondalup line in the early 1990s. Given that there are already 'bus stations', the change to 'train stations' was probably logical.
Contributor's comments: [Sydney informant] I am a high school teacher and can report that 'train station' has totally replaced 'railway station' and 'station' in the usage of school students. I agree that it is almost certainly an Americanism.
Contributor's comments: I don't know if we have to blame the USA for "train station"; Melburnians have said it since at least the late 70s, whereas my parents (from Sydney/Newcastle) found it very strange when they moved down. Sydneysiders in their thirties have told me they still find "train station" to be Victorian term.
Contributor's comments: I left Adelaide in 1983 when we had railway stations. Now they are all called train stations. What happened while I was in the country? It is used widely now in Adelaide, not just the eastern states or Perth.
Contributor's comments: Railway station remains the correct term in Adelaide, and the stations are officially titled so. However, train station seems increasingly common in speech. It is an Americanism.
