verse

to play against (from versus) used by school children (especially primary?): Who are we versing next week in the soccer, Sir?

Contributor's comments: This is commonly used in Sydney as well.

Contributor's comments: to play against (from "versus"): "Our school is versing Blacktown next week."

Contributor's comments: I have heard the word verse used in the same way by children in several primary schools in Ballarat and district over the past year (2002-2003). eg We versed the "....." team at netball/football yesterday.

Contributor's comments: Derived from versus, used by young Australian Rules Football players in Sydney (u12) instead of playing: "We are versing Easts today. Who are you versing?"

Contributor's comments: opposing (playing against): "We will be versing the other team. Note: I submitted this some months ago but it apparently was not thought to be acceptable. It is very common parlance among primary school children in Canberra in a variety of sporting situations. I'm not sure about secondary."

Contributor's comments: My 9 yo daughter in Darwin and all her netball mates talk about 'versing' other teams. Then I heard it on a local radio station yesterday as well!
