A violent thunderstorm in the Top End, with strong wind, lashing rain and plenty of lightning and thunder: Looks like we're in for another knock 'em down tonight.

Contributor's comments: Knock 'em down rains only occur at the end of the Wet season. Knock 'em down refers to the rain knocking down the tips of the spear grass that has just started turning brown at this time of year, the rain knocks the seedy heads off for next year's spear.

Contributor's comments: The term "knockem down rains" has been in use for 55 years to my knowledge. It then meant the heavy rain storms at the end of the Wet which knocked down all the (6ft) tall grass.
